How Trauma-Informed Care Transforms the Birthing Experience

Trauma from a previous birth can cast a long shadow. Studies show 1 in 3 mothers report feeling traumatized by childbirth. At Our Birthing Center, we facilitate trauma‑informed care to create a nurturing, healing environment for moms and dads.

By integrating proven practices used by our credentialed midwives in NJ and Manhattan, NYC, we support healing and trust from the very first visit.

Understanding Trauma‑Informed Birthing Care

We acknowledge that traumatic birth or care-related anxiety can deeply affect moms. That’s why midwives credentialed at Our Birthing Center are trained in trauma-informed principles:

  • Safety

  • Trust

  • Choice

  • Collaboration

  • Empowerment.

We support these principles biophilically, from calm lighting and sound dampening to comfortable privacy – every detail is curated for your ultimate comfort and total emotional safety.

Building Trust Through Communication

In trauma-informed sessions, we avoid abrupt or medical-heavy phrasing. Instead of asking, “Did you have a normal delivery?” we open space with “Can you share your birth story?” This shift from clinical language to compassionate dialogue helps moms feel genuinely seen and heard.

We also offer ACE screening when appropriate, endorsed by ACOG, to identify past trauma and tailor support.

Personalized Emotional Coping Strategies

Understanding triggers empowers moms. For many, simply knowing they can pause, speak, or request comfort at any moment helps dissolve anxiety. There’s no prescribed itinerary – it’s your highly personal journey.

Support includes options like hydrotherapy, acupressure, essential oils, gentle movement, and the use of nitrous oxide for relaxation, all carefully explained so moms feel fully in control.

Consistent Presence & Continuity

Moms benefit from continuity: consider working with the same midwife and doula (if applicable) throughout prenatal, labor, and postpartum phases. This relationship anchors trust and reduces stress. It echoes findings that midwifery care models result in fewer interventions, increased satisfaction, and better mental health outcomes.

Post‑Birth Reflection and Support

Acknowledging birth experiences helps heal wounds. We recommend working with trauma-informed counselors and maternal mental health providers who can conduct Birth Reflections sessions. These are open conversations allowing moms to process events, express feelings, and reclaim autonomy.

Physical & Mental Wellness Follow‑Up

Our model extends beyond birth. A certified postpartum nurse visits within 24 – 48 hours at your home to check on both mom and baby in a relaxed setting.

This is followed by emotional check-ins at 6 weeks, integrating mental health screening into routine care for early signs of PTSD, anxiety, or postpartum depression.

Community & Peer Healing

We recommend joining support groups, virtual and in-person, where moms share, connect, validate, and find strength in one another. Peer connection echoes the principle that communal healing fosters resilience. We also work alongside trauma-informed doulas and therapists who specialize in trauma-sensitive birth support.
